RIZAL IN JAPAN

"I'm going to dedicate to you the last chapter of these reminiscences of my early youth. No woman better than you have loved me, no woman like you have sacrificed herself. As the flower of the chodji falls from the stem fresh and perfect without ever being stripped of its petals or withered, tender and poetic even after its fall, thus you fell. Neither did you lose your purity nor did the delicate petals of your innocence wilt-Sayonara, sayonara! You will never come to know that I have thought of you again or that your image lives in my memory; and nevertheless I always think of you. Your name lives in the sighs of my lips; your image accompanies and animates all my thoughts. When shall another divine afternoon like that in the temple of Meguro return? When shall the colors of the camellia, its freshness, its elegance ... Ah! The last descendant of a noble family, true to an unfortunate vengeance, you are beautiful ... Everything is finished! Sayonara, sayonara!"

I hesitate to use this website for anything personal believing it should remain a place where fans of my music can come free of the distractions that occasionally arise with the rest of my job.

However, due to the unfounded and ugly rumors that have appeared in the papers over the last few days, I felt they shouldn’t pass without comment. Patti and I have been together for 18 years- the best 18 years of my life. We have built a beautiful family we love and want to protect and our commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married.

Philippine Cardinal Jaime L. Sin Dies at 76

Cardinal Jaime L. Sin, 76, the curiously named archbishop of Manila whose crucial support for his country's "people power" revolution of the 1980s made him one of the most politically influential members of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, died June 21 in the Philippines.

In explaining his willingness to intervene in politics, he said the church "cannot proclaim eternal salvation to our flock when we are blind to the physical realities which deny them that very salvation here on earth."

Cardinal Sin retired after submitting the compulsory resignation letter at age 75.

"I have given my very best to God and country," he said in a statement. "I beg pardon from those I might have led astray or hurt. Please remember me kindly."

What Brown Missed as a Child Set Pistons Coach in Motion - New York Times

No doubt Freud would have done more enlightening work with such compelling material, but even Herb Brown suggests that the trail of transience and tumult ultimately leads back to Milton Brown. When I mentioned that his relationship with Larry fascinated me in large part because I have sons about four years apart, he said, "They're lucky to have you."

Then he added, his voice choking with emotion: "You know, we've had great lives, Larry and I. We had uncles, aunts, and my mother is the greatest woman on earth. But when I look back, I realize how much we missed not being able to grow up with a dad, to be able to go out, play ball, be together."

ZEN THOUGHTS FOR THOSE WHO TAKE LIFE TOO SERIOUSLY

1. A day without sunshine is like -- night.
2. On the other hand, you have different fingers.
3. I just got lost in thought. It wasn't familiar territory.
4. 42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot.
5. I feel like I'm diagonally parked in a parallel universe
6. Honk if you love peace and quiet.
7. Remember, half the people you know are below average
8. The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese in the trap.
9. I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol.
10. Support bacteria. They're the only culture some people have.
11. A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
12. Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.
13. Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.
14. Always try to be modest, and be proud of it!
15. If you think nobody cares, try missing a couple of payments.
16. How many of you believe in psycho-kinesis? Raise my hand...
17. OK, so what's the speed of dark?
18. How do you tell when you're out of invisible ink?
19. If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
20. When everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
21. Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now.
22. Everyone has a photographic memory. Some just don't have film.
23. If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?
24. How much deeper would the ocean be without sponges?
25. Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
26. What happens if you get scared half to death twice?
27. I used to have an open mind but my brains kept falling out.
28. I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder.
29. Why do psychics have to ask you for your name?
30. Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what the hell happened.
31. Light travels faster than sound. That is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot

Let your pain be my sorrow
Let your tears be my tears too
Let your courage be my model

[somewhere i have never travelled]

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously) her first rose

or if your wish be to close me,i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

Bob Dylan: I Believe in You

Don't let me drift too far,
Keep me where you are
Where I will always be renewed.
And that which you've given me today
Is worth more than I could pay
And no matter what they say
I believe in you.

JOHNNY CARSON, 1925-2005

He was the king of late night, and there will be no other.

That's nothing against Joey Bishop, Dick Cavett, Alan Thicke, Joan Rivers, Pat Sajak, Jay Leno or David Letterman -- or Steve Allen and Jack Paar, for that matter. It's just that there will never be another Johnny, or another era in time like the 30 years he spent as host of "The Tonight Show" on NBC.

The Hit We Almost Missed

Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" was almost never released. By SHAUN CONSIDINE

"...During my last trek through what remained of the A & R department, I was invited to sort through a stack of records and demos that were to be junked. Among them I discovered a gem: a studio-cut acetate of "Like a Rolling Stone." Carefully packing it into an empty LP jacket, I carried it home and that weekend played it more than once in my apartment. The effect was the same as it had been the first time I had experienced it. Exhilaration. Heart pounding. Body rolling - followed by neighbors banging on the walls in protest. Then, on Sunday evening, it came to me. I knew exactly where the song could be fully appreciated."

1. Si Inay, tinuruan niya ako HOW TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE: "Kung kayong dalawa ay magpapatayan, doon kayo sa labas!

Schadenfreude

The Police on "Schadenfreude"

Revolver: "Message In A Bottle" is one of the band's most intense tracks. What made it work so well?

Andy Summers: I've always said it was Stewart's finest drum track, plus great guitar riffs, lyrics, the song - it was one track where everything came together. We had also just learned the trick of playing a song two or three times in a row to let the energy build, then we'd come straight in for another take with the tape still rolling.

Stewart Copeland: It was also a great way of getting the tempo up to where I like - which is really fast.

Sting: That's what he thought. We were actually trying to tire Stewart out so we could slow it down a bit.

Revolver: Lyrically, wasn't it a big step out of simple alienation when the narrator realises he's not 'alone in being alone' in the third verse?

Sting: I was always sort of proud of that, yeah. As a narrative, it had a beginning, middle and an end. The story actually developed. It wasn't just 'I'm lonely, isn't it terrible!' - which is what a lot of my other songs were about. If I'm lonely, but I realise everybody else is too. I feel better. I think the Germans call that Schadenfreude - enjoying the misery of others.

Stewart Copeland: My favourite thing about Message In A Bottle, apart from all the money we made off it, was hearing cover bands trying to play my drum parts. I'd overdubbed about six different parts, and to watch some band in a Holiday Inn struggling to play all those overdubs still gives me great joy. Now that is really Schadenfreude.

The greatest song of all time

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- "Like a Rolling Stone," Bob Dylan's scornful, ironic ode to a spoiled woman's reversal of fortune, was named the greatest rock 'n' roll song of all time on Wednesday by Rolling Stone magazine.

The six-minute opening track from his landmark 1965 album "Highway 61 Revisited" broke the barrier of the three-minute hit single and established Dylan as a mainstream pop artist, marking his transformation from folk troubadour to rock sensation.

"No other pop song has so thoroughly challenged and transformed the commercial laws and artistic conventions of its time, for all time," wrote Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke in an article accompanying the magazine's list of the top 500 rock songs of all time.

Outrage over the JFK slay video game

A British firm seeking to capitalize on the anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's murder today is issuing "JFK Reloaded", a purportedly educational "docu-game" that lets players fire the fatal shots from the Texas Book Depository over and over again.

Presidential historian G. Calvin MacKenzie of Colby College said, "Aside from being in incredibly bad taste, the idea of marketing it as an educational tool seems to stretch the notion of education beyond belief."

'Superman' star Christopher Reeve dead at 52

We Have Lost Even

We have lost even this twilight.
No one saw us this evening hand in hand
while the blue night dropped on the world.

I have seen from my window
the fiesta of sunset in the distant mountain tops.

Sometimes a piece of sun
burned like a coin between my hands.

I remembered you with my soul clenched
in that sadness of mine that you know.

Where were you then?
Who else was there?
Saying what?
Why will the whole of love come on me suddenly
when I am sad and feel you are far away?

The book fell that is always turned to at twilight
and my cape rolled like a hurt dog at my feet.

Always, always you recede through the evenings
towards where the twilight goes erasing statues.

We're protected from Cat Stevens

The time to deport Cat Stevens was 30 years ago, when he was war bling 'Oh Very Young' and a cover of Sam Cooke's 'Another Saturday Night.'

In all fairness, however, that also would have required deporting Don McLean, the Village People, Morris Albert, Debby Boone, Dawn, the Captain and Tennille, Bo Donaldson, Gilbert O'Sullivan, the New Seekers and a mess of other people who made the 1970s what they were. A watch list would have been longer than Tony Orlando's mustache. "

"And because the Soviet dinar had devalued, Saddam Hussein plucked this guy out of society to punish him, and six other small merchants, for the devaluation of their currency. He just summarily said, you're it, come here -- and cut his hand off."

Every Reason to Be Afraid

You might think, for example, that the first thing the Bush administration ought to have done on the morning after 9/11 was to step up U.S. efforts to secure Russia's crumbling arsenal of nuclear weapons and its weapons-grade material. Instead, the president's team focused all their energies on invading Iraq.

Katulad ng utos ng boss ko, binuksan ko ang isang plastic bag ng sm at ibinuhos lahat ng lamang tae ng kalabaw sa carpet. this was a technique taught to me In selling to get a massive and immediate attention from the buyer.

Time - The Dark Side of the Moon Lyrics - Pink Floyd

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

The Circle Game

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Congressman Porter Goss, President Bush's nominee for CIA director, could be his own worst enemy when it comes to making the case that he deserves to lead the U.S. intelligence agency.

Garp'sWorld

In the life of a man, his time is but a moment,
his being an incessant flux,
his senses a dim rushlight, his body a prey of worms,
his soul an unquiet eddy, his fortune dark,
and his fame doubtful.

In short, all that is of the body is as coursing waters, all that is of the soul as dreams and vapors; life a warfare, a brief sojourning in an alien land; and after repute, oblivion.

Hi Catherine.

Thank you very much for writing to us. OK, here goes...

Singapore is the best place to live in if you are talking about cleanliness, low crime, excellent schools, great food, great housing, excellent mass transportation. It's a place where everything works. Credit that to the government who has an obsession with making everything right.

Singapore can be both expensive and cheap. It really depends on the kind of lifestyle that you guys will live. From what your surname indicates your husband is of Chinese origin. Am I correct? What kind of work will you guys be doing? All of these are major factors actually. Tell me your annual income (or how much you are willing to spend) when you move to Singapore and I will tell you what you can afford.

As for us - we live in an HDB flat which we rent. I pay around S$850 a month (that's around 595K won). This is a four room flat, fully furnished. Utilities - electricity, gas and water is around $150 per month (105K won). Food and other expenses for two is around $800 (560K won). Phone $50 (35K won). Cable TV with Broadband Internet $100 (70K won). So add this all up and you have the expenses of a typical middle class Pinoy couple living in Singapore.

What's not to like? The seasons don't change - it is one perpetual summer. The island is small (but you can hop to Indonesia, Thailand or Malaysia easily anytime). It could be expensive if you compare it to say - Manila, or Australia. It will be cheaper than Korea, that I can say. I've been to Seoul and I know.

O sige, dito na lang muna. If you need more information, answer the questions I asked you earlier.

Take care,
Jay

Hi Ester!

Just wanted to personally greet you a happy new year. I hope you had a great birthday, Christmas and new year celebration.

Our vacation back home was great. The three weeks we were there seemed too short. Christmas and New Year's in the Philippines is really different - so festive and alive. We had a nice party at home. Everybody was there - Emy, Rene and the kids, Gigi and TJ, Dennis and Meng, Paolo and Jed, Dante, Lynna, Tessie and all the kids.

Mom sends her love - she told me to tell you that she got the money you sent her. She was so touched and teary eyed when she mentioned it to me. Auntie Nana also sends you her love and thanks.

Great news from home - I just called mom yesterday and she told me that Dante got re-hired by RJ to work again in the radio station starting this Sunday. There is also a big chance that he'll be into the TV show that Ramon Jacinto has in his TV station - RJTV. I hope he cleans up his act this time. I sent him a letter the last time and talked to him last Christmas break.

We're set for our trip to California this Saturday. We stop by LA to visit Jet's relatives, then we go to Sacramento for her other relatives. We got a rental so we'll take the long drive from LA going up via the I-5. It should be a pleasant 6 hour drive. Something like the Dallas to Houston route, which I drove in 1998, I think it was. So, it will be no problem. Plus I drove this route already last September. By the end of the week, next week, we'll be dropping by Tiong Anas and the kids. They have prepared a party of sorts I think.

It is Jet's birthday today. She turns 40. Which is why we're flying to California really. It's my big birthday gift - an all expense paid vacation to the states to see her relatives and to visit friends.

Hopefully, in the coming years, we can drop by Sarasota so we can see you. This is not impossible as I am doing a lot of stateside traveling for the company I work in. It will not be that difficult to schedule a trip to your place in the future. If not, we can always meet in California which is where our office is located.

Mom's birthday is coming up. Any chance of you going to Manila to join us on her 80th birthday. It would be nice if you could come. Emy and I are planning a big party for her. Stay tuned for further announcements.

O sige. I just wanted to say hi. If ever you have the time, give me a call on my cellphone either here or when I'm in the states. Bye big sister - Love you!

isang delubyo na papatay sa lahat ng pilipino over the age of 2 years old.

this will assure us that we will be able to start fresh. doon sa mga maiiwan na mga bata, tuturuan sila kung paano maging honorable, ma-prinsipyo, matulungin at desente. in 40 years time, sigurado ako, talo pa natin ang japan.

sabi sa dyaryo rito: "singaporeans have problems with having children because they don't have enough sex". busy kasi masyado ang mga tao rito. some even claim that they prefer to sleep over sex. mas malala yung mga 40 yrs or over. some say that thay actually fell asleep while having sex.

sana naman pag dating ko ng 40 eh pwede pa ring magsampay ng twalya sa pototoy ko pag may flag ceremony. hehe. sigurado naman ano, kasi... ako ay pilipino! a tapang, a tao. a pugot a kamay, hindi a takbo... etc. etc.

habang naglalakad kanina, di ko alam kung bakit iniisip ko ay yung first time kong nakakita ng colored TV. weird.

one of the fascinating things about being born in the 60's is the fact that i grew up during the transition between black and white and colored. hanggang ngayon di ko pa rin makalimutan yung first time ko na makita si cookie monster sa colored tv. it was a magical experience.

Heterosexual Oral Sex may soon be legal in Singapore

kaya pala walang kakwenta kwenta ang sex life ng mga singaporeans. may mga batas sila na nagbabawal sa isa sa pinakamasarap na paraan on how to give and receive sexual pleasure. kawawa naman sila. i will quote the first paragraph of the recent article from the today newspaper in singapore, para maintindihan nyo how surprised i was to hear about this...

"HETEROSEXUAL Singaporean adults may soon be able to indulge in oral sex without breaking any laws, following a review of the penal code."

Section 377 (Unnatural Offences) of the Singaporean Penal Code says: 'Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine. Penetration is sufficient to constitute the carnal intercourse necessary to the offence in this section.'

Section 377A (Outrages on Decency) adds further: 'Any male person who, in public or private, commits, or abets the commission by any male person, of any act of gross indecency with another male person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years.'

kawawang mga city kids na spoiled singaporeans. they are missing a lot of things we take for granted.

ONE GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT

kung meron man magandang lumabas sa america ay ito... nasa's spirit lands successfully on mars. sana ganito na lang parati ang gawin ng mga amerikano. it's a much better alternative than waging war. sabi nga sa CNN - if you're into science, its a great time to be alive. i have been fortunate to be alive during the time of The Apollo Program, Viking, Galileo, Hubble Space Telescope, Sojourner and now Spirit and it's twin Opportunity.

it is indeed a great time to be alive in this great period of space exploration. great job guys!

GARDENING 101

as a gardener, you must have the proper equipment - just a few necessary ones actually: a garden hose with a really good expensive nozzle, small shovel, grass cutter, an expensive trimming shear and a trowel (hindi twalya, gago!). it pays off to get the best (and most of the time, expensive) tools because they don't break easily. you'll know what i'm talking about when you're watering your plants and the nozzle suddenly shoots into the sampay of your soon to be pissed off neighbor. and don't forget - simplify.

When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky

Look out across the fields, see me returning,
Smoke is in your eye, you draw a smile.
From the fireplace where my letters to you are burning,
You've had time to think about it for a while.

Well, I've walked two hundred miles, now look me over,
It's the end of the chase and the moon is high.
It won't matter who loves who,
You'll love me or I'll love you
When the night comes falling from the sky.

I can see through your walls and I know you're hurting,
Sorrow covers you up like a cape.
Only yesterday I know that you've been flirting
With disaster that you managed to escape.

I can't provide for you no easy answers,
Who are you that I should have to lie?
You'll know all about it, love,
It'll fit you like a glove
When the night comes falling from the sky.

I can hear your trembling heart beat like a river,
You must have been protecting someone last time I called.
I've never asked you for nothing you couldn't deliver,
I've never asked you to set yourself up for a fall.

I saw thousands who could have overcome the darkness,
For the love of a lousy buck, I've watched them die.
Stick around, baby, we're not through,
Don't look for me, I'll see you
When the night comes falling from the sky.

In your teardrops, I can see my own reflection,
It was on the northern border of Texas where I crossed the line.
I don't want to be a fool starving for affection,
I don't want to drown in someone else's wine.

For all eternity I think I will remember
That icy wind that's howling in your eye.
You will seek me and you'll find me In the wasteland of your mind
When the night comes falling from the sky.

Well, I sent you my feelings in a letter
But you were gambling for support.
This time tomorrow I'll know you better
When my memory is not so short.

This time I'm asking for freedom,
Freedom from a world which you deny.
And you'll give it to me now,
I'll take it anyhow
When the night comes falling from the sky.

The Beatles Get "Naked"

paul mccartney will release a new version of the "Let it Be" album this november. ang pangalan ng CD ay "Let it Be...Naked". tinanggal nila ang lahat ng mga ka-EK-EKAN na tracks like yung choir, orchestra and synths that phil specter added duing the post prodution work.

orignally kasi, "Let It Be" was supposed to be a "back to the basics" album ng beatles. it never happened dahil binigay nga ni lennon ang trabaho kay specter who added a lot of "kalandian". in the beatles anthology DVD and book, paul made a lot of noise about his disappointment with the final product. i guess, this is his time to get even and release the record as it was supposed to be released.

kung ako ang tatanungin eh ang pangit naman ng title. sana "Let it Be" tapos sa baba, may nakalagay na "STRIPPED". pero siyempre, i am looking at how the new old sound will sound.

Mala-THE ROCK saka DIE HARD sana ang nangyari.

Sabi nga ng mga taga-Assumption, "We're not like tanga naman..."

May linya ka pang "we're ready to die for our principles."

Hay nako, may pasok tuloy ngayon. Nabitin kami. Yun nga lang, you didn't die for your principles. May paiyak-iyak and hug pa kayo. God, it's so nakakahiya naman to the enemy.

well, i can confirm that some blog sites are blocked in china, particularly, blogspot. pero iyong interactive-X naman ay hindi blocked. may topak rin ang gobyerno rito. di ba nila alam, pag pinipigil, lalong nang gigigil. di rin naman effective ang blocking dahil, pwede siguro i-bypass ito by hosting your site outside of blogger.com, or better yet, find another blog provider.

may suspetsa ako na may mastermind ding tanga na nagplano rito eh. what's the objective of this silly coup? to sink the philippines deeper into shit!. no plans, no support, no reason. well, there are reasons but the manner to voice their concerns was waaay off tangent. stupid! stupid! stupid! dapat eh bigyan sila ng lecture sa armed struggle.

ang puso ko, ang puso ko. hehehe. sige mylab, kain muna kaming lunch. just arrived in beijing. talk to you tonight.

eto, word for word ang report:

"The 37-year-old is alleged to have removed the woman's clothes at his Chuan Park flat in Lorong Chuan at about 3 am last Nov 3. He is also alleged to have outraged her modesty a second time, three hours later. The woman reported what happened to the police on the same day. According to Channel 5's News 5 Tonight, the woman is Shankar's colleague and the incident happened after a party."

i wish him the best of luck. he'll need it because this case will certainly affect his career, and that is just the least of his worries.

Saturday, May 24, 2003

dear mylab,

work hard, play hard

BALITANG NAKAKAINIS...A lifestyle check of 25 officials at various levels of the Bureau of Internal Revenue who earn only a modest income yields a wealth of information on grand houses, expensive vehicles, and shares in businesses and companies. One BIR regional director, for example, lives in a big house in posh Ayala Alabang, yet he earns less than P300,000 a year. Parked in his garage on the day PCIJ visited were a Ford Expedition, a Toyota Land Cruiser and a brand new BMW. A Revenue District Officer whose annual salary is P270,000 has two weekend houses in Calamba and lives during the week in a Greenhills condominium.

My Twice Daily Temperature Readings

Politics can derail gov't
efforts vs SARS: officials

Posted:6:49 AM (Manila Time) | Apr. 26, 2003
By Armand N. Nocum
Inquirer News Service

POLITICS and the paranoia of officials who control local health facilities can undermine the government's fight against SARS, officials said.

Jean Marc Olive, representative of the World Health Organization in the Philippines, expressed concern about how the behavior of local officials could affect the Philippines' capacity to battle SARS.

"If it's a national emergency, they should cooperate," Olive said after learning that "JP," the country's fourth SARS case, had earlier been refused admission at the Eastern Samar Regional Medical Center in Tacloban City.

Dr. Rainero Zamora, Samar provincial health officer, said they had planned to take JP to the hospital "but local officials in Leyte objected to putting her there."

Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit said local politics was among "the problems that we will be facing" in attending to SARS cases in the rural areas.

"Ideally, people [with SARS] should be placed in isolation at the regional hospitals," he said. But the devolution of health service to local officials can pose a problem, he said, considering that "governors and mayors are known to act according to their interests."

Reviews of Point of No Return

Melina Gerosa, Entertainment Weekly, April 30, 1993
No offense to Nina Simone, but younger viewers of Point of No Return have been known to wonder if the singer so effective at quelling the beast in Bridget Fonda's angry character is merely a screenwriter's invention. Far from it. As a matter of fact, the now 60-year-old High Priestess of Soul has been at it since the '50s, lending her edgy, throaty androgyny to every genre from gospel to R&B to raging black protest to torch songs (a collection of the latter, entitled A Single Woman, is due out from Elektra in July).
Point of No Return's director, John Badham, could think of no better voice to echo his heroine's raw emotions. "Simone is a woman who doesn't take any crap from anybody," says Badham, who included five of her song on the Hans Zimmer soundtrack (RCA).

The fact that the seasoned diva's rebel yell may be a nuance lost on the twenty something set did not daunt the director. "Audiences don't like to be spoon-fed the same old stuff. I didn't want to just exploit Nirvana because all the kids are listening to that," says Badham. He has had good luck sticking to his guns in the past. While he was making Saturday Night Fever, the movie with the biggest-selling soundtrack of all time, Badham says, "I played the Bee Gees tape for the music people. They all said, ~This is no good. Can't we get some Boz Scaggs?'"

Singapore...Five charged with murder after gang fight

FIVE men were charged yesterday with the murder of teenager Mohamad Sadik Senin at Clarke Quay, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The five include a 17-year-old student, Mohamad Iswan Mohamad Ismail.

The others were Saifuddin Hanifi, 27, a general worker; Mohamed Rizal Nooraini, 25, a cook; Mohamed Khairy Yusope, 23, and Mohamed Feros Kassim, 20, both unemployed.

Police are looking for 10 more people who are believed to have been involved in the incident. Mr Mohamad Sadik was found lying motionless on the ground outside Jams The Club in Clarke Quay at about 3 am on Thursday. He had been bashed on the head with a baseball bat and stabbed several times in the neck and shoulders. He died about an hour after he was taken to the Singapore General Hospital. The 18-year-old, who was due to be drafted into national service, was apparently caught in the middle of a dispute between rival gangs outside the club premises. He had been seen inside the club with his elder brother and some friends earlier. Four of the suspects were detained at the scene by police.

If convicted, the five suspects face the death penalty.

once you put yourself in the shoes on those being invaded, you'd think twice about starting a conflict. madaling umpishan ang gulo, mahirap itong tapusin. kahit anong hight tech pa ng mga ginagamit na mga weapons, mayron pa ring mga mamamatay na nga innocenteng civilians... marami pa ring mauulila.

Singapore Woman Linked to 100 SARS Cases
YEOH EN-LAI
Associated Press

SINGAPORE - Esther Mok went to Hong Kong to shop but came home carrying a deadly flu-like virus that has since spread to more than 100 people in Singapore and killed both of her parents and her pastor.

Miraculously, she has survived.

Mok, a 26-year-old former flight attendant, was one of three original cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, to emerge in Singapore early last month.

Mok was very sick - and very contagious - when admitted to a Singapore hospital on March 1, but doctors had no idea that she was suffering from the strange form of pneumonia that had already killed dozens in China.

She had regular visits from her family and members of her church - all oblivious to the fact that they were exposing themselves to SARS.

Her father, mother and pastor have since died of SARS. Her uncle is in intensive care battling the illness. Mok's grandmother and brother are also sick but in stable condition.

In fact, all but a handful of the 118 reported cases in Singapore have been traced to Mok, and health officials have dubbed her a SARS "super spreader."

Two other Singaporean women also traveled to Hong Kong in February and developed SARS after exposure to a Chinese doctor, Liu Jianjun, while staying at the Metropole Hotel. They have not infected others, the health ministry said.

"Esther Mok infected the whole lot of us," health minister Lim Hng Kiang said at a recent press conference.

Two other so-called super spreaders, Canadian Kwan Siu-Chiu and American Chinese businessman Johnny Chen, fell ill after a stay at the Metropole hotel and have helped spread the illness around the world. Unlike Mok, both died.

"We don't know why some people are able to spread it so easily and some don't," said Chew Suok Kai, health ministry's director of epidemiology and disease control.

Experts from Atlanta's Centers for Disease Control will be in Singapore later this week to further analyze data from SARS patients here in a bid to find out how the "super spreader" phenomenon works, Chew said.

"There are so many things we want to know about this disease but don't know yet. One of the key things we are working on is how the super-spreader spreads," said Chew.

Mok herself has recovered and could be released from a hospital, but authorities are reluctant to let her go, fearing the media frenzy that is likely to greet her.

Like "Typhoid" Mary Mallon, who famously infected dozens of people in the New York area in the early 1900s and was forced by the government to live alone on an island, Mok is living her own modern-day exile in a hospital room networked with televisions and telephones.

Mok's quarantine prevented her from attending the memorial services of her parents, Joseph and Helen, but she has not been alone. Mok's sister, Rebekah, has taken a leave of absence to be with her, said Pastor Humphrey Choe of the family's church, the Faith Assemblies of God.

"We are all praying for her and for everyone involved," said Choe, adding that the church has rallied around Mok.

Since this island nation of 4 million people first reported its SARS outbreak a month ago, it has quarantined about 1,000 people, ordering them to stay home for 10 days or risk prosecution. Nine people have died and 118 have been reported to have the illness.

"I feel sorry for her but you might wonder whether Singapore would be so badly affected had she not been in the wrong place at the wrong time," said deliveryman Gary Sivalingam.

SARS has killed over 100 and sickened over 2,600 worldwide, mostly in Asia.

SEVERE ACUTE RESPIRATORY SYNDROME (SARS)
AND FOREIGN MANPOWER RELATED ISSUES
STATEMENT BY DR LEE BOON YANG
MINISTER FOR MANPOWER

As part of Government’s measures to contain SARS in Singapore, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will take precautionary measures against the importation of SARS through the arrival of new foreign workers and against a possible outbreak of SARS among the foreign worker population in Singapore. It is important that despite the outbreak of SARS, life and economic activities must continue with some adjustments to deal with this new threat.

To enable work and business to continue and to safeguard Singaporeans and foreign workers, we will introduce new requirements:

Quarantine for 10 days all new Work Permit holders and Employment Pass holders entering Singapore from SARS-affected countries to prevent the import of new SARS cases and the spread of SARS at the workplace;

Existing Work Permit holders and Employment Q-pass holders who visit SARS-affected countries will be subject to the same quarantine on their return to Singapore; and

Take proactive measures to strengthen awareness of SARS and its prevention among employers of foreign workers and foreign workers.

Entry of Foreign Workers from SARS-Affected Countries

With effect on 11 April 2003, the MOM will impose a 10-day quarantine on all Work Permit holders and Employment Pass holders entering Singapore from the WHO list of SARS-affected countries. This measure will minimise the risk of imported cases causing a SARS outbreak at their workplace.

Work Permit holders will be quarantined at facilities that Government will provide. Employment Pass holders may be quarantined at their homes here or suitable residential accommodation pre-arranged by their employers.

For work permit holders, we would advise all employers against bringing in foreign workers from the WHO list of SARS-affected countries as far as practicable until the situation in these countries improves. We encourage employers to consider engaging Singaporean workers or workers from other countries instead. Notwithstanding this, some companies may still need to bring in workers from these countries for business reasons. These foreign workers will be quarantined for 10 days at their employers’ expense before a work pass is issued for them to start work. Companies that do not wish to comply with the quarantine requirement will not be allowed to bring in workers from SARS-affected countries.

We strongly urge employers not to send their foreign workers back on home leave or send any of their workers for work assignments or training in SARS-affected countries. We also urge employers to temporarily hold back rotation of the staff in Singapore with those from SARS-affected countries. The MOM will cancel the work permits of existing foreign workers if they leave Singapore for any of these affected countries. Employers will have to make fresh work permit applications for these workers and they will be subject to the 10-day quarantine on entering Singapore.

Education

We all have to exercise social responsibility to prevent the spread of SARS in Singapore and at the workplace. Employers and workers have an integral role to play in preventing the outbreak of SARS at the workplace. MOM has worked with MOH to prepare advisories to employers of foreign workers as well as foreign workers to instruct them on precautionary measures they can take to safeguard themselves and prevent the spread of SARS. The advisories will be available in English, Mandarin, Tamil, and Malay as well as in the languages of the foreign workers. These advisories will be issued shortly.

MOM has also started discussions with the industry associations for sectors employing large numbers of foreign workers to plan and coordinate action to be taken in the event of an outbreak at the workplace.

The advisories issued to employers of foreign workers is in conjunction with the general advisory that the Ministerial Committee on SARS will be putting out to all employers on steps to take in preventing and containing outbreaks in the workplace, as well as on recommended employment practices.

Conclusion

This Ministry appreciates that such moves will represent a cost to businesses. We will work closely with other agencies including JTC to keep costs down as far as possible. We have consulted a number of employers of foreign workers from SARS-affected countries. In view of the seriousness of the situation, they support the move to impose quarantine on all foreign workers arriving in Singapore from SARS-affected countries. To assist employers during this difficult time, MOM will exercise flexibility in renewing or extending work passes of existing workers of similar nationalities beyond the usual maximum period of stay. This would reduce the need for new foreign workers from the SARS-affected countries. The other work permit conditions will apply to renewal or extension.

We are facing an unprecedented situation. We are dealing with a serious unseen threat. By working together in tackling SARS, we will enable life and businesses to continue with measures to safeguard our workers and citizens.

kd lang talks about her song, "summer fling" and her CD, "Invincible Summer":

"Summerfling" - "This is really the core of the record thematically. It gets to the heart of what I was trying to express. If I had to explain it, I'd say it's about how being in love makes you feel like it's summer all the time. This was the second song I wrote for the album and, although I worked out some of the imagery and the vocabulary in my mind beforehand, everything really came together with this song."

that arrogant australian prime minister...Howard's statement, made in reply to a television interviewer's question citing a possible strike on Australia launched from a "neighboring country," drew a sharp reaction from:

1. Indonesia
2. Malaysia
3. the Philippines
4. Thailand.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said any pre-emptive Australian strike on Malaysian territory would be considered an act of war on the government and the country.

Political opponents at home accused Howard of damaging Australia's reputation in Southeast Asia at a time he should be building security alliances with neighboring states.

They also said he was making the country a target for terrorists.

Writing in Tuesday's edition of The Australian, Anthony Bergin of the Australian Defense Studies Centre and Hugh Smith of the Australian Defense Force Academy argued that pre-emption should only arise as an option when cooperation between governments to prevent terrorism has failed, and no other viable option exists.

song lines i wish i wrote...

"You will seek me and you'll find me In the wasteland of your mind"

"For all eternity I think I will remember That icy wind that's howling in your eye."

"In your teardrops, I can see my own reflection"

bob dylan wrote it. great lines no?
